OHSAS 18001 is a British standard which is globally recognized and accepted as a method which promotes and assist in placing safe and healthy environment within an organization. The standard identifies and control health and safety risk and minimizes potential hazards of accident. The standard enables organizations to place a system in line with other management systems to have a healthy and safe environment in an organization so that it can achieve its overall objectives.
Cost saving and reduction in accidents are the major benefits which can be achieved after implementation of OHSAS 18001. This in turn helps in reducing risk of production delays, provides safe environment within the organization and also assist in meeting legal obligation. Clause 4.4 of OHSAS 18001 standard deals with implementation and operation. The areas covered in this clause are as follows:
a) Establishing and clearly defining the role, responsibility of personal and giving sufficient authority to implement the system.
b) The personal assigned to the task are properly trained and competent to perform their duties.
c) All concerned personnel,belonging to or connected with the organization be encouraged to participate and support occupational health and safety practices, policies and objectives.
d) The organization is to ensure that occupational health and safety management system is properly understood and is effectively executed.
e) The organization must ensure that proper documentation is identified and maintained.
f) The organization should be ready to control all identified risk and fulfill all legal requirements and related regulations.
g) The organization must have contingency plans to meet any possible emergency and have regular drills to ensure preparedness of the system.
Kindly note that OHSAS 18001 can be integrated with other management systems like ISO 9001 and ISO 1400, which are generally implemented by most of the organization.
